The Joestu has been the home of several earthquakes over the last couple of days.

27th of September 2010:Iran reports 6.1 earthquake west of Shiraz

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit southernIran Monday but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Iranian Seismological Center reported that the quake hit at 7:22 a.m. EDT (11:22 GMT) at a depth of 8 km (5 miles) in Konar Takhteh, west of the city of Shiraz. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 5.7 magnitude quake west of Shiraz.

A local official confirmed the quake, saying: "So far we have no reports of casualties." Residents in Shiraz felt the quake, a witness told Reuters. Iran is criss-crossed by major faultlines and is frequently hit by earthquakes.

21rst of September 2010:Moderate earthquake hits off eastern Taiwan

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau says a moderate 5.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off the eastern coast of the island. No casualties, damage, or a tsunami were immediately reported. The bureau says the quake hit at 11:17 am on Monday (0317 GMT) and it was centered 22 miles (35 kilometers) from the county of Hualien, 85 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of the capital Taipei. Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan but most are minor and cause little or no damage. However, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people

17th of September 2010:Tectonic Zip: Predictable Events of the February 2010 Earthquake in Chile

The complex fracture pattern created by the earthquake in Concepcion (Chile) on February 27, 2010 was to a certain extent predictable. GPS observations from the years before the earthquake showed the pattern of stresses that had accumulated through the plate movements during the past 175 years in this area.

The stress distribution derived from the observations correlates highly with the subsequent fracture distribution. In all likelihood the tremor removed all the stress that had accumulated since the last earthquake in this region, which was observed by Charles Darwin in 1835. An earthquake of similar magnitude in this area is therefore unlikely in the near future. This result was presented by scientists of the GFZ German Centre for Geosciences (Helmholtz Association) in the latest edition of the scientific journalNature.

"The Maule earthquake near Concepcion, Chile, on February 27 registered with a momentum magnitude of 8.8, makes it one of the largest earthquakes to have been recorded in its entirety via a modern network of space-geodetic and geophysical instruments on the ground," says Professor Onno Oncken, head of the Geodynamics Department at GFZ. "It thus offers a unique opportunity to compare detailed observations prior to the earthquake with those taken during and after it, and to re-evaluate hypotheses regarding the predictability of such events."

Measurements using the satellite navigation system GPS showed that the seafloor of the Nazca plate in the Pacific Ocean does not slide evenly under the western boundary of the South American continent. Rather, it appears from the GPS measurements that some parts of the ocean floor got locked with the subsurface of the continent. In the gaps, however, the Nazca plate continued to push under South America. The resulting uneven stress pattern was released by the Feb. 27 earthquake in such a way that, just like a zipper, the locked patches were ruptured one after the other. As a result, this seismic gap off the Chilean west coast is now closed, one last gap remains in northern Chile.

Here, the GFZ scientists set up a plate boundary observatory, in order to make use of the entire range of geoscientific instruments to record the conditions before, during and after an earthquake -- an important step in understanding the processes of plate tectonics.

Modern Earth science may still not be able to predict the location, time and magnitude of an earthquake. But the present study offers an optimistic perspective concerning the predictability of possible fracture patterns and magnitudes of expected earthquakes.

10th of September 2010:NZealand quake city to lift no-go zones as mental toll rises

New Zealand authorities on Thursday said no-go zones in quake-hit Christchurch will be lifted and enlisted rugby stars to promote mental health services to help stressed residents. Exclusion zones enforced by police and the military since last weekend's 7.0-magnitude tremor would be removed at 5:00 am Friday (1700 Thursday GMT), Christchurch mayor Bob Parker said.

Parker said the city centre should be safe to enter, provided there were no major aftershocks. The removal of the barriers comes as normality slowly returns in the SouthIsland city, where the focus is turning to the mental toll wrought on residents subjected to around 300 aftershocks since the main quake on Saturday.

Health Minister Tony Ryall said local All Blacks players Richie McCaw, Brad Thorn, Kieran Read and Corey Flynn would contribute to a campaign urging people in the disaster zone to seek help. "Many people will need reassurance and practical advice as to what to do and where to go to get help," Ryall said. The civil defence ministry said doctors were reporting a rise in the number of people presenting with stress and anxiety issues. It said public health officials were working on "psycho-social support" for locals.

Rachel Hood said she decided to send her daughters Izra and Jasmine, who are three and one-years-old respectively, to stay with their grandmother in Wellington after a shallow 5.0 tremor hit on Wednesday morning, sending frightened residents fleeing into the streets.

"I just don't want traumatised children for the rest of their lives so I'm sending them away before it get worse," she told the Dominion Post newspaper.

Police this week reported a 53 percent rise in domestic violence since Saturday's quake, attributing it to "the stressful situation people are currently in". Meanwhile, supermarket operator Foodstuffs announced the first job losses from the quake, saying its store in suburban Kaiapoi was irreparably damaged and 86 workers were being made redundant.

"We are very distressed that the damage to the supermarket has meant we are unable to re-open and we are doing everything we can to help all of those affected," Foodstuffs chief executive Steve Anderson said.

Christchurch remains in a state of emergency after the earthquake, which caused damage estimated at four billion dollars (2.7 billion US). However, some aspects of life were returning to normal, with officials lifting advice for residents to boil drinking water to avoid the danger of contamination. Bus services also resumed and education authorities said some schools would be allowed to reopen after their buildings were deemed safe.
